INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES
The Horticultural Crops Development Authority (HCDA) has a highly specialized technical department that provides extension service on innovative technologies. Below are some of the technologies currently being promoted by the Authority.
ORANGES SWEETENING

Growers can now receive from the Authority exclusive information on pre and post harvest orange treatments that significantly improve the sweetness and the appearance of locally produced oranges. In addition, information is also available on how growers can get better prices by holding the produce through storage of oranges for up to six (6) months after harvest.
MANGO DWARFING

The Authority has introduced low bark grafting technology of mango fruit seedlings. This technology has dwarfing characteristics making pruning, pest and disease management easier thus guaranteeing good quality mango fruits. Low bark grafted mango nurseries supported by the Authority are in all major mango growing areas across the country.
Mango growers can now get better prices by avoiding glut through flower induction thus ensuring early crop maturity in a season. This technology is a combination of pruning, Multi K application and water regulation
ENCERT ORGANIC
The Authority is promoting organic production and facilitates certification of smallholder farmers to the ENCERT Organic standard in order to promote conservation of biodiversity. Currently, the Authority is supporting pineapple growers in kilifi and kisii in complying with organic standards. Intensive training is available for all farmers interested in pursing prime organic markets both locally and abroad.
SUMMER FLOWERS

Smallholder farmers in marginal and high potential areas are receiving technical support in production of a range of summer flowers and market linkage through the Authority’s extensive extension network across the country.
HYDRAM TECHNOLOGY FOR ARID AND SEMI ARID LANDS
The Mogotio site earmarked for installation with a hydram to facilitate smallholder irrigation in the area. The Authority provides specialized extension services to enhance utilization of Arid and Semi-Arid Land (ASAL) through technical support in constructing affordable water harvesting and storage structures; and installation of appropriate irrigation systems
CLEAN PASSION FRUIT SEEDILINGS
Other services and material currently available courtesy of the industry include: clean passion fruit seedlings; grafting material for improved mango and avocado varieties; low bark grafted avocado seedlings; Apple seedlings; Top-working of fruit trees; appropriate kiosks for retailing horticultural produce; and farmer organization in Produce and Marketing Organizations.
