Call For Research
Proposals
The need for the establishment of H.R.F arose out of
the general constraints facing the industry and in particular inadequate
research in horticulture including:
- · Lack of industry driven and participatory
research.
- · Limited collaboration between research
organizations and the industry when determining research priorities.
- · High reliance on external funds with no
contribution from the industry.
- · Low dissemination and adoption by
stakeholders of research findings.
- · Poor research-extension-farmer linkages.
The H.R.F was established by introducing a levy on
horticultural exports to generate funds to address the above constraints. In
this view, Horticultural Crops Development Authority (H.C.D.A) constituted a
Horticultural Research Fund (H.R.F) Committee in 2005 whose membership is drawn
from different stakeholders in the horticulture industry to oversee
horticultural research in priority areas.
RESEARCH PRIORITY AREAS
During 2006/2007, the Steering
Committee identified the following priority areas for research;
- Interceptions of horticultural produce
including fruits, vegetables and cut flowers at export markets and
rejections at the points of exit. Focus on pests and chemical residues.
- Status of horticultural produce for
domestic markets in respect to food safety.
- Market research for important
horticultural crops.
THE REQUIREMENTS FOR
THE PROPOSALS
The H.R.F Committee invites proposals from
researchers to carry out research on the above priority. The proposals should;
- Demonstrate how the activities will reduce
rejection, interceptions.
- Show how the research will impact on
productivity.
- Show how it will collaborate with other
relevant institutions.
- Have a letter of commitment from
collaborators.
- Have a work plan and Budget.
- Have a research period not exceeding one
year.
